THE LOCAL THESIS

Editorial thesis: Nairobi's opportunity lies in making already-connected systems work better for everyday users. Focus on affordability, service completion and financial resilience, with public institutions and informal businesses participating in the design.

Nairobi has a published climate action plan spanning 2020–2050 and a county food systems strategy for 2022–2027. In its August 2024 food-systems update, the county explicitly discusses coordination across markets, nutrition, environment, planning and information technology, alongside work on food traceability. This creates an unusually concrete research starting point: follow food and resources through the actual city system, identify which organisation owns each handoff, and test a service against the county's stated access and safety objectives. A strategy is evidence of policy direction, not proof of funded procurement.

Kenya's 2024 FinAccess survey reports formal financial access at 84.8% among adults aged 18+ nationally, with 9.9% excluded from any financial service. These are national figures and are not substitutes for neighbourhood-level Nairobi data. High access also leaves room to investigate fees, useful savings and resilience rather than counting newly opened accounts. National primary-care network implementation and the 2024 extended producer responsibility regulations provide further institutional context. The following proposals use those systems as constraints and possible channels; they are editorial pilot hypotheses, not established ventures or evaluated impact claims.

02 / SIX CONNECTED LENSES

A city is a living system.

Explore six ways to ask a better business question in Nairobi. Connections indicate shared operating questions, with no scoring or market-size comparison.

THE CONNECTING THESISEditorial thesis: Nairobi's opportunity lies in making already-connected systems work better for everyday users. Focus on affordability, service completion and financial resilience, with public institutions and informal businesses participating in the design.

Editorial relationships across the six research markets. Every node opens the full local brief; each opportunity still requires local validation.

03 / PROPOSED IMPACT FRAMEWORK

Make the benefit testable.

An impact claim should survive a difficult question. Design the measurement before you design the success story.

  1. 01

    Establish the baseline

Start in Nairobi. Define the people, geography and existing service before measuring a change.

  2. 02

    Run a bounded pilot

Choose one market, one buyer problem and one testable intervention. Agree local safeguards before starting.

  3. 03

    Compare the outcome

Ask what would have happened otherwise. Compare like with like and record how much uncertainty remains.

WHAT TO MEASURE

Nairobi: a local outcome ledger

  • Climate

Track energy per unit of output, cost after service fees, equipment downtime and occupant comfort; state the emissions factor and period used.

  • Food

Measure rejected kilograms, saleable shelf life, delivered cost, trader net margins and documented safety issues, alongside final-customer prices.

  • Health

Track completed appointments, time to appropriate follow-up, patient travel cost and staff administrative time; compare against a pre-pilot baseline.

  • Finance

Measure ability to meet essential bills, fees paid, user-reported control and complaints; report account activity separately from financial wellbeing.

  • Learning

Report paid completion, skills assessment, retained employment and earnings at three and six months, broken down by participant background where consent permits.

  • Circular

Report accepted tonnes, contamination, collection cost, worker earnings and the share of claims supported by destination records.

Keep the counter-evidence.

Check who is left out, what the intervention costs and which negative effects would invalidate the claim. Involve the people expected to benefit.

Where could useful
businesses begin?

The evidence frames the context. Buyers, pilots and outcomes below are proposed research directions, requiring local validation.

Climate & energySDG 7 · 11 · 13

The city's long-term climate plan provides a policy frame, while EPRA publishes the national electricity and energy statistics needed for realistic modelling. National supply figures cannot establish reliability at one Nairobi business.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS · TO VALIDATE LOCALLY

The opportunity

Hypothesis: efficiency and load-management services for small commercial premises can reduce operating costs before customers commit to new generating assets. Pair technical measurement with a practical maintenance offer.

Potential customers

Commercial landlords, small cold stores, workshops and retail groups with access to utility bills, equipment and a person authorised to change operations.

A pilot worth testing

Audit five sites, meter representative equipment for four weeks, then test a maintenance or scheduling change at two sites with matched operating records.

Measure the impact

Track energy per unit of output, cost after service fees, equipment downtime and occupant comfort; state the emissions factor and period used.

Watch the tradeoff

Do not count national renewable generation as site-level additional impact. Check tariffs, safety approvals and tenant incentives; savings need weather and output adjustments.

Food systemsSDG 2 · 12 · 13

The county's food strategy update highlights traceability, food safety and coordination. That supports investigating information gaps in existing markets rather than assuming that farmers need another standalone marketplace.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS · TO VALIDATE LOCALLY

The opportunity

Hypothesis: simple batch records, delivery scheduling and shared handling standards for fresh produce can make rejected deliveries easier to prevent and resolve while retaining familiar trading relationships.

Potential customers

Produce aggregators, wholesale traders and institutional kitchens; county food-safety officials and market associations should help specify the process, without implied endorsement.

A pilot worth testing

Select one commodity and buyer group. Track origin, arrival, rejection and sale for four weeks, then test reusable handling equipment and a basic traceability record.

Measure the impact

Measure rejected kilograms, saleable shelf life, delivered cost, trader net margins and documented safety issues, alongside final-customer prices.

Watch the tradeoff

Digital records should not exclude small suppliers unable to afford devices or certification. Validate physical food handling; a QR code does not demonstrate safety.

Health & careSDG 3 · 10

National primary-care networks are intended to coordinate facilities, community outreach and referrals. Nairobi-specific workflow research can identify where people fail to complete the next step in an existing care pathway.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS · TO VALIDATE LOCALLY

The opportunity

Hypothesis: consent-based referral reminders and a staff-facing completion register could improve navigation between community care and a participating clinic, without introducing automated diagnosis.

Potential customers

Licensed provider networks and authorised health programme managers; patients and community health workers are co-design participants, not an assumed source of subscription revenue.

A pilot worth testing

With institutional approval, follow one non-emergency referral pathway across a small group of facilities. Offer an assisted phone option and record reasons for non-completion.

Measure the impact

Track completed appointments, time to appropriate follow-up, patient travel cost and staff administrative time; compare against a pre-pilot baseline.

Watch the tradeoff

Confirm current health-data rules and interoperability requirements. Protect consent and identifiers, establish clinical escalation and avoid duplicating the public record system.

Financial inclusionSDG 1 · 8 · 10

FinAccess makes a distinction between access and the broader financial needs of users. For Nairobi ventures, the test is whether a product improves everyday control over money, including for people using shared or basic phones.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS · TO VALIDATE LOCALLY

The opportunity

Hypothesis: transparent cash-flow records and savings prompts for irregular-income workers could help users plan essential expenses, provided the service is useful without taking on additional debt.

Potential customers

SACCOs, licensed financial institutions and worker associations with an established relationship and a defined service budget; users must retain control over their data.

A pilot worth testing

Test an opt-in, low-bandwidth budgeting workflow with thirty members of one occupational group. Compare usability, fees and cash shortfalls over two income cycles.

Measure the impact

Measure ability to meet essential bills, fees paid, user-reported control and complaints; report account activity separately from financial wellbeing.

Watch the tradeoff

Avoid coercive savings, hidden fees and unsolicited credit. Use appropriate licensed partners, explain consent in accessible language and accommodate users without private device access.

Learning & workSDG 4 · 5 · 8

Strathmore's iLabAfrica offers a visible research and skills base in Nairobi. The useful next question is which employers can turn capability into paid work with appropriate supervision.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS · TO VALIDATE LOCALLY

The opportunity

Hypothesis: applied projects in energy monitoring, secure business systems or data operations can connect university and non-university learners to concrete SME tasks, rather than adding a general-purpose course.

Potential customers

SMEs and service firms prepared to sponsor a paid assignment with clear acceptance criteria; training institutions can deliver instruction and practical assessment.

A pilot worth testing

Secure five paid project briefs, recruit a small mixed cohort and provide device access, mentoring and agreed working hours during a six-week sprint.

Measure the impact

Report paid completion, skills assessment, retained employment and earnings at three and six months, broken down by participant background where consent permits.

Watch the tradeoff

Measure placement quality and retention, not only certificates. Protect learners from unpaid replacement labour and avoid assuming that internet access is universal.

Circular citiesSDG 6 · 11 · 12

Kenya's 2024 EPR framework creates producer obligations for end-of-life products and packaging. It offers a potential paying customer for verified recovery, but does not eliminate collection and processing constraints.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS · TO VALIDATE LOCALLY

The opportunity

Hypothesis: an auditable recovery service for one packaging stream can link commercial buildings and collectors to a producer responsibility scheme, with traceability through final acceptance.

Potential customers

Registered producers, producer responsibility organisations and commercial property managers; existing waste workers should participate in pricing and operating design.

A pilot worth testing

Choose a material with confirmed offtake, agree roles with authorised operators and track weighed consignments from twenty premises through processor acceptance for eight weeks.

Measure the impact

Report accepted tonnes, contamination, collection cost, worker earnings and the share of claims supported by destination records.

Watch the tradeoff

Check current registration and licensing requirements with NEMA. Prevent double-counted recovery credits, unsafe handling and displacement of collectors; a collection receipt is not proof of recycling.

questions in view.

Access is not financial resilience

A high national inclusion rate does not establish affordable, suitable use in a particular community. Evaluate fees, financial stress and informed consent alongside transaction activity.

Central Bank of Kenya, KNBS and FSD Kenya

Coordination and procurement

Food systems and care pathways involve several county and national organisations. A published strategy is not a procurement commitment; establish ownership and a funded maintenance path.

Compliance claims need physical evidence

EPR-related demand can reward documentation without changing material flows. Verify operators, weighing and final destinations, and include worker conditions in impact reporting.

QUESTIONS FOR LOCAL DISCOVERY
  1. Where does the existing service pathway break for a specific neighbourhood, and which organisation can change that handoff?
  2. Can a pilot improve user outcomes while operating on the buyer's recurring budget rather than a temporary grant?
  3. What evidence would show additional impact beyond transactions or activities that would have happened anyway?

Follow the evidence.
