THE MARKET THESIS

Look beyond collecting waste. Repair, reuse, building materials, water efficiency and reliable collection create opportunities when material quality, repeat demand and accountable operations work together.

01 / THE EVIDENCE, DRAWN TO SCALE

Make the scale visible.

This is the quantity reported by the cited institution. It is context for a question, rather than a forecast of startup revenue.

TWO DISTINCT TIME POINTS

Municipal waste: baseline and projection

2023 baseline
2.1bn t
2050 projection
3.8bn t
03.8bn tonnes

2023 is the reported baseline. 2050 is a projection under UNEP's described trajectory, not an observed result or a revenue forecast.

Visuals reproduce the cited signal, including its original scope. Rounded unit graphics are reading aids; the displayed figure and source definition govern the claim.

UNEP’s 2024 waste outlook projects municipal solid waste increasing from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2023 to 3.8 billion tonnes in 2050 under the described trajectory. The 2050 figure is a projection, not measured waste or a revenue forecast.UNEP / International Solid Waste Association

UNEP and the International Resource Panel report that natural-resource extraction tripled over the previous five decades. Material consumption, infrastructure and environmental impacts must be considered together; recycling alone cannot establish circularity.UNEP / International Resource Panel

06 / FOLLOW THE SYSTEM

Follow the value. Find the friction.

A proposed operating map for circular cities. Read the handoffs before choosing a product to build.

Circular
system
  1. 01

    Avoid unnecessary demand

  2. 02

    Maintain & repair

  3. 03

    Reuse assets

  4. 04

    Collect & sort safely

  5. 05

    Verify recovery

THE BUYER QUESTION

Property owners, construction contractors, utilities, manufacturers, municipal agencies and material processors. Secure a credible purchaser for recovered material before treating collection volume as a business model.

THE EXPERIMENT

Follow one material stream or a bounded building portfolio. Establish current disposal, maintenance and water or material use. Verify the receiving facility and actual substitution of virgin material, while tracking worker safety and income.

Read the complete value chain
  1. Avoid unnecessary demand
  2. Maintain and repair
  3. Reuse assets and materials
  4. Collect and sort safely
  5. Recover verified secondary resources

Editorial system map derived from the research brief. The sequence is a framework for discovery, with no claim that a Pheonix programme, customer or pilot is operating.

How might the business work?

Test service contracts, repair revenues, reuse brokerage or verified material supply. Include contamination, transport, storage, quality testing and rejected loads in unit economics; low-value bulky materials are especially logistics-sensitive.

03 / PROPOSED IMPACT FRAMEWORK

Make the benefit testable.

An impact claim should survive a difficult question. Design the measurement before you design the success story.

  1. 01

    Establish the baseline

Define the people, geography, existing service and time period. Record the full cost before the intervention.

  2. 02

    Run a bounded pilot

Use the proposed experiment above as a starting question. Agree the local scope, duration, comparison and safeguards before beginning.

  3. 03

    Compare the outcome

Ask what would have happened otherwise. Compare like with like and record how much uncertainty remains.

WHAT TO MEASURE

The outcome ledger

  • Material use avoided

    Material use avoided before recycling

  • Verified reuse routes

Verified reuse and final treatment destinations

  • Water & lifecycle savings

Water or lifecycle emissions saved with stated assumptions

  • Worker safety & income

Worker safety, income and service reliability

Keep the counter-evidence.

Check who is left out, what the intervention costs and which negative effects would invalidate the claim. Involve the people expected to benefit.

Proposed measurement pathway. No baseline, pilot result, participant count or achieved impact is being reported in this diagram.

WATCH THE TRADEOFF

What could change the case?

Diverted material may still be dumped, burned or exported into harm.

Formalisation can displace workers already earning from recovery.

A recovered tonne is not automatically a tonne of virgin material displaced.

QUESTIONS BEFORE THE FIRST PILOT
  1. Can the need for a new product or material be avoided first?
  2. Who will buy the recovered output at a repeatable quality?
  3. Does the model improve conditions for existing workers?

Follow the evidence.
