THE PLACE BEHIND THE OPPORTUNITY

Sydney offers several distinct impact markets rather than one uniform ecosystem. A useful entry strategy pairs a tightly defined buyer and geography with a measurable service improvement: apartment electrification, safer care handoffs, better food separation or access to paid transition work.

ABS estimates Greater Sydney's population at 5,638,830 at June 2025. That statistical metropolitan area is much larger than the City of Sydney local government area. The City's environmental strategy sets a 2035 net-zero objective and reports a 41% reduction in local-area emissions in 2023 against 2006. Founders must preserve these boundaries: a council target, a state programme and a metropolitan population cannot be mixed into one market-size calculation. Scope determines the relevant buyer, planning responsibility, service coverage and baseline.

THE BUYER QUESTION

Office occupiers, fit-out contractors, property managers and social buyers with specific material specifications and installation dates.

THE EXPERIMENT

Match materials from one outgoing fit-out to a confirmed buyer, documenting condition, removal, storage, transport and installation.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS · TO VALIDATE LOCALLY

The opportunity

The City's strategy embeds circular practices and lower embodied carbon. A founder could test disassembly inventories and reliable sourcing for an office refit before creating a broad materials marketplace.

03 / PROPOSED IMPACT FRAMEWORK

Make the benefit testable.

An impact claim should survive a difficult question. Design the measurement before you design the success story.

  1. 01

    Establish the baseline

Start in Sydney. Define the people, geography and existing service before measuring a change.

  2. 02

    Run a bounded pilot

Use the proposed experiment above as a starting question. Agree the local scope, duration, comparison and safeguards before beginning.

  3. 03

    Compare the outcome

Ask what would have happened otherwise. Compare like with like and record how much uncertainty remains.

WHAT TO MEASURE

The outcome ledger

  • LOCAL OUTCOME MEASURE

Mass actually reinstalled, new purchases displaced, cost including handling, and embodied emissions estimated with disclosed methods.

Keep the counter-evidence.

Verify safety, contamination and product suitability. Listing an item or moving it into storage does not establish avoided waste or carbon savings.

Proposed measurement pathway. No baseline, pilot result, participant count or achieved impact is being reported in this diagram.

PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE

The global market context.

UNEP’s 2024 waste outlook projects municipal solid waste increasing from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2023 to 3.8 billion tonnes in 2050 under the described trajectory. The 2050 figure is a projection, not measured waste or a revenue forecast.UNEP / International Solid Waste Association

UNEP and the International Resource Panel report that natural-resource extraction tripled over the previous five decades. Material consumption, infrastructure and environmental impacts must be considered together; recycling alone cannot establish circularity.UNEP / International Resource Panel

WHAT TO LEARN BEFORE BUILDING
  1. Can the need for a new product or material be avoided first?
  2. Who will buy the recovered output at a repeatable quality?
  3. Does the model improve conditions for existing workers?

Follow the evidence.
